Off the Cushion: Mindfulness for Everyday Life

Join us for a drop-in series on mindfulness on distinct themes

Themes for each class:

Oct 13th: Mindful Eating: nourishment & contentment in consumption

Oct 20th: Mindful Technology: focus & boundaries with our devices

Nov 3rd: Mindful Transitions: joy in the in-betweens

Our moment to moment experience is shaped by our relationship to ourselves and the world around us. When we are not in “right relationship” with our environment moving through the world, we experience tension and stress. We may find it challenging to maintain a sense of calm and presence. So, how can we come into healthy, loving relationship with ourselves and the world? How can we find ease and joy in every moment?

Luckily, ancients from India, and other parts of Asia, began exploring this question through Buddhist traditions over 2500 years ago. This 3-part workshop (all drop-in) will empower you to bring the wisdom of mindfulness meditation off the cushion and into your life. You’ll learn how to cultivate heightened awareness and intention around the often-overlooked moments that make up the fabric of your day (see below for the specific themes assigned to each date.) Through a blend of meditation, discussion, and practical exercises, you'll learn to:

  • Recognize and reframe unhelpful habits and beliefs that keep you stuck in mindless patterns

  • Create sacred "containers" for activities like eating, using technology, and transitioning between tasks

  • Develop personalized rituals to infuse presence, care, and reverence into routine experiences

The intention of the workshops isn’t to only make you feel good while in the studio, and then go back to your old habits after it’s complete. Rather, you will gain a firm foundation for mindful habits that you can continue to build on long after the workshop’s end.

October 13th: Mindful Eating

Do mealtimes feel rushed, distracted, anxiety-inducing, or disconnected for you? There is potential for great joy and contentment with eating and drinking, but you may not know how to find it. The good news is, mindfulness gives us powerful tools to notice, deeply inquire about, and ultimately grow into an intentional, nourishing relationship with food.

Through guided meditation, journaling, small group sharing, and ritual creation, you’ll build a new foundation for finding joy and fulfillment in this everyday activity.

Discover how to:

  • Tune in to the flavors, textures, and aromas of your meals with heightened awareness

  • Recognize and honor your body's hunger and fullness cues

  • Minimize distractions and multitasking during mealtimes

  • Infuse everyday eating and drinking with a sense of reverence and self-care

Finally, you’ll leave this workshop with a personalized "ritual card" to help you bring the practice of mindful consumption into your daily life. This workshop will include a small snack and refreshment, but not a full meal.

October 20th: Mindful Technology

How often do you find yourself mindlessly scrolling, tapping, and swiping on your phone - only to emerge feeling drained, distracted, and disconnected from the present moment? In this transformative workshop, you'll learn to build a healthier, more intentional relationship with your technological devices.

Through guided meditation, group discussion, and practical exercises, you'll explore:

  • Identifying your personal triggers, habits, and pain points around technology use

  • Cultivating gratitude and appreciation for the benefits your devices provide

  • Setting healthy boundaries and rituals to minimize mindless, compulsive use

  • Bringing presence, focus, and care to the way you interact with your phone, tablet, or computer

Leave this workshop empowered to use your technology as a tool to enhance your life, rather than a crutch that depletes your energy and attention. Discover how to maintain a sense of mindfulness, even in our digital-driven world.

November 3rd: Mindful Transitions

In our fast-paced, productivity-driven lives, we often view the in-between moments - the waiting, the walking or commuting, the chores - as mere obstacles to get through. But what if we could transform these so-called "wasted" times into opportunities for joy and deeper connection?

In this final workshop of the series, you'll learn to cultivate a more nourishing relationship with the transitional periods that punctuate your day. Through guided meditation, group discussion, and hands-on exercises, you'll explore:

  • Recognizing your habitual patterns and emotional triggers when in transitionary states like commuting, chores, & waiting

  • Designing personalized rituals to bring mindfulness and joy to everyday tasks

  • Reframing your beliefs about time, productivity, and the value of the "in-between"

  • Discovering how to infuse even the most mundane moments with a sense of sacredness

Leave this workshop empowered to transform the gaps and pauses in your day into oases of calm, clarity, and self-care. Unlock the hidden gifts within your daily transitions, and step more fully into the flow of your life.
